Front-load the learning

Build something physical as early as possible. A rough prototype tells you more than a month of CAD work. You’ll find problems faster, and you’ll find them when they’re cheap to fix.

Design for your constraints

If you’re going to need FDA clearance, build design controls from day one. If you’re going to manufacture in China, design for those processes from the start. Retrofitting is always slower than designing it in.

Kill scope creep early

Every feature you add is a week you won’t get back. Be ruthless about what’s actually required for this version. The best products ship, then improve.

Use experienced engineers

Senior engineers make fewer mistakes. They’ve seen the failure modes before. They know what documentation actually matters. The hourly rate is higher; the total cost is lower.
